RBC Unveils Retail Branch Retrofit Plan to Reduce Carbon Emissions
Bank Aims to Electrify Operations and Reduce GHG Emissions
Royal Bank of Canada (RBC) has announced plans to retrofit its retail branches across Canada to reduce its carbon emissions. The plan, which is part of RBC's commitment to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, will involve electrifying the bank's branches and installing energy-efficient lighting and appliances.
Electrification and Energy Efficiency
RBC plans to replace fossil fuel-powered heating and cooling systems with electric alternatives, such as heat pumps and electric boilers. The bank will also install LED lighting and sensors to automatically turn off lights when they're not in use.
These measures are expected to significantly reduce RBC's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The bank estimates that the retrofit plan will reduce its emissions by approximately 20,000 tonnes annually, which is equivalent to taking 4,000 cars off the road.
