Japan Typhoon Season 2024 Forecast

Typhoon Shanshan: Japan Braces for 'One of the Strongest' Storms

Typhoon Shanshan Approaches Southwestern Japan, Bringing Torrential Rain

Residents Urged to Take Shelter as Category Four Typhoon May Dump Up to 236 Inches of Rainfall

Southwestern Japan braced on Wednesday for what officials say could be one of the strongest typhoons in recent history.

Typhoon Shanshan was churning toward southwestern Japan on Tuesday, bringing torrential rain and winds of up to 160 miles per hour.

Residents have been urged to take shelter as the Category Four typhoon could dump up to 236 inches of rainfall in 24 hours.

Japan has issued an emergency warning for the southwestern region of the country, including the islands of Kyushu and Shikoku.

Typhoon Shanshan is expected to make landfall on Kyushu on Wednesday evening.

The storm could bring widespread flooding, landslides, and power outages.

Residents have been advised to stock up on food and water, and to be prepared to evacuate if necessary.

Typhoon Shanshan is the latest in a series of powerful storms to hit Japan in recent years.

In 2019, Typhoon Hagibis killed more than 100 people and caused billions of dollars in damage.

Climate change is making typhoons more frequent and more intense, according to scientists.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has warned that climate change will lead to more extreme weather events, including more frequent and more intense typhoons.

The IPCC has also warned that climate change could lead to sea level rise, which could make coastal areas more vulnerable to flooding.
