Ariana DeBose makes history as first queer woman of color to win Oscar

DeBose wins same award as Rita Moreno, her predecessor in the role.

Actor Ariana DeBose has made history as the first Afro Latina and first openly queer woman of color to win an Academy Award for acting. The American actress, dancer, and singer made her name on Broadway before wowing audiences as an Afro-Latina Anita in the film remake of "West Side Story." For her performance, DeBose won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first queer woman of color to win the award. She is also the second Latina to win in the category, following Rita Moreno, who won for her performance in the original 1961 film.
